On August 24th 9:30a-11:30a in partnership with the town of West Hartford, Hartford Healthcare will host a stroll/walk to raise awareness and provide education about breastfeeding to the community.
Data support “breast milk is the best food for babies in the first year of life”. Unfortunately, many people are not aware of the benefits which include the nutritional value, development of immune system and reduction of risk for sudden infant death syndrome. Breastfeeding is a healthy choice however, the benefits extend beyond solely meeting the needs of the baby. For women who can breastfeed, there are benefits to the lactating mother as well. The benefits include helping to stop bleeding after giving birth, as well as, lowering the risk of diabetes and some cancers.
Hartford Hospital has resources in place to assist expecting and newly delivered families.
It is important for us to provide education that can help support, promote and protect breastfeeding. While this is a concern in the general population. Individuals who are from marginalized communities, in addition to experiencing disparities in maternal health, also have disparities in initiating and sustaining breastfeeding. History plays a role in impacting Black women and their relationship with breastfeeding.
Hartford Hospital in recognition for this year’s theme, “Breastfeeding Support for All” created by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (a global network whose aim is to support breastfeeding around the world) is elevating the need for equity and addressing the needs of members of the community.
